Aizawl, 4 September 2025: The Department of Geography and Resource Management, School of Earth Sciences and Natural Resources Management, Mizoram University, inaugurated its lecture series programme with a thought-provoking lecture delivered by Senior Professor Vishwambhar Prasad Sati, Dean of SES & NRM. The lecture, titled “Drivers of Massive Debris Flow in Dharali, Uttarkashi: Role of Cloudbursts, Landscape, and Human Activities,” was held on 4th September 2025.
Through a detailed PowerPoint presentation lasting over an hour, Prof. Sati examined the complex interplay of natural and human-induced factors contributing to catastrophic debris flows in the Himalayan region. He discussed the role of cloudbursts, fragile landscapes, and anthropogenic activities, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable planning and disaster resilience in vulnerable mountain ecosystems.
The programme began with a Welcome Address by Prof. Benjamin L. Saitluanga, Head of the Department of Geography and Resource Management, who also extended the Vote of Thanks.
The session drew strong participation from research scholars of Geography & RM, Environmental Science, and the Centre for Disaster Management, as well as master’s students of Geography & RM. Faculty members in attendance included Prof. Hazarika and Dr. Mandal (Horticulture), Dr. Nav (Environmental Science), Dr. Gagoi (Forestry), and Prof. Dinpuia (Centre for Disaster Management). From the Department of Geography & RM, the lecture was attended by Dr. Bobby Singh, Dr. Lozan, Dr. Imanual, Dr. Norbu, and Ms. Kimi.
The lecture marked a successful beginning to the Department’s new academic initiative, providing an engaging platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge sharing on pressing environmental and disaster-related issues.
