About the Department :         

         The Department of Social Work was initiated under NEHU (Mizoram Campus) in July, 1990 by Dr. Bharati Sharma, Reader and Founder-Head of the Department. It was however, only on the formation of the full-fledged Mizoram University that the masters Programme in Social Work was started. The first MSW course commenced on 1st August, 2002. The Department imparts education and training in professional Social Work with the aim of providing qualified personnel in Social Welfare and Social development with specific reference to North-East Region. At present, the Department is offering MSW and PhD degree programmes. The MSW programme is offered with two specializations namely, Community Development, and Family and Child Welfare. In research, the department focuses on the areas of Sustainable Livelihood, Social Inclusion and Social Development, Child Rights and Protection, Disability and Rehabilitation, Women, Health and Mental Health and Youth Development.

• Organised a Collaborative “One- day Capacity Building Workshop on Integrating social and Behaviour Change Modules into Higher Educational Institutions Curricula” on 15^th September, 2023 at MZU Guest House Conference Hall with MZU. The Social and Behaviour change (SBC) Secretariat Office under the agis of Assam Don Bosco University and UNICEF Assam & Northeast Region.

• Department Conducted Swatch Bharat Abhiyan on 24 the February, 2023 to clean the Department Rooms, Corridors and its surroundings.

• World Mental Health Day: Mental Health in an Unequal World on 13^th October 2021 jointly organized by the Department of Social Work Mizoram University, Aizawl in collaboration with the Centre for Psychosocial Support in Disaster Management National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore.
