About the Department :         

Sociology delves deep and reconnoitres issues vital to our own lives, our communities, our nation, nay the world. The sociological imagination and the skills that one learns through the study of sociology are absolutely inimitable, regardless of the paths we eventually walk our way. The attitude to understand and develop empathy for diverse populace and cultures, the ability to think critically about social problems and social policy, and the aptitude to analyse data and interpret materials and write coherently are just a few of the many skills the study of sociology stands for.

Our Masters‘ programme and research activities focus on topics and themes vital to the discipline and have been oriented towards addressing contemporary sociological issues in their thematic, theoretical and methodological aspects that have both basic and applied dimensions. Students and faculties put their best of endeavour to bring semblance between time- suited course curriculums and need based CBCS pedagogy. The Department has all that it should/must have including high-tech class rooms, smart classes, a full-fledged computer laboratory and a departmental library. We offer a unique environment in which to study sociology, either on its own or in combination with other disciplines, and to pursue sociological research at the cutting edge of the discipline. Availability of several open elective courses floated by relevant departments facilitates reciprocity and exchange of students among them within the University.

Seminars/Workshops/Conference etc..

• All the 4 faculty in the department have Ph.D. degree as on date.
• The institution has conducted two seminars during the last five years: “Rehabilitation of Disabled and Inclusive Development with specific reference to North East India” held on 28^th & 29^th February 2020, funded by NEC and “Indigeneity and Sustainable Development: Locating the Local in the Context of G20” held on 30^th and 31^st May 2023, funded by MZU and ICSSR.
• The department in collaboration with MEDMOC organized “Workshop on Entrepreneurship Development” on 29^th July 2019 for the 4^th semester students.
• The department has carried out some extension and outreach programme on record at the initiative of NSS, pickle making challenge etc.
• The department also organized Peer Training on writing Research Diary on 24^th August 2022 which was delivered by Lalnunpari (2022 Dept. Gold Medalist) and Zaihmingliani (2022 Best Research Diary recorder)
• Each batch of students are taken on CSST outside of the state every year. This year, the final semester students were taken to Bangkok, Thailand for an interactive session with Thammasat University students during 12^th – 23^rd January, 2024.
• President Students Alumni Association had a meeting with all Alumni’s on 21.02.2024 for a Gala Alumni Function in the Department on its decade Anniversary in April 2025.
• Jeremy A. Rinker from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, USA visited the Department to deliver a lecture on “Peace and Conflict” and later had an interactive session with the students on 7^th March, 2024.
• The Department conducts Swatchh Bharat on every Friday to clean the Department Rooms, Corridors and its surroundings.
• Field Trip @ Nghalchawm with IV & II Semesters on 05.2024
• Parents Teachers Interaction of II Semester Students on 17.05.2024
