About the Department :
The Department was established in the year 2003 and was the first department in School of Physical Sciences in Mizoram University, with a four-semester M.Sc. program. From the year 2007, the department has its permanent Faculty, with a full strength of nine at present. The department offers a four semester NEP2020 based M.Sc. program, with approved student strength of 30(Thirty) and Ph.D degree course. The department conducted Pre-Ph.D. course work for the research scholars as per the requirement of the UGC Ph.D. Regulations. The department has its thrust areas in the fields of Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, Spectroscopy, Solid State Electronics, Theoretical and Experimental Nuclear Physics, Accelerator physics, Fuel Technology, High Energy Physics, NanoPhysics, Material Science, Radiation Physics and Astrophysics. DST through FIST supports the teaching and research activities of the Department. State of Art facilities such as Low energy charged Particle Accelerator has been developed in the department, the first of its kind in North East region, under funds from DST-SERB. A new DST-FIST Instrumentation Laboratory has also been established in the department in the year 2025 with state of art instruments such as XRD, Spectrofluorometer, Gamma Spectrometer to cater the needs of researchers in the university and across the country. The research activities of the faculties have been funded by funding agencies such as UGC, CSIR, MoES, DST-SERB, DRDO,ISRO, DAE-BRNS, etc. adding to the research profile of the department.
