The Executive Council of Mizoram University in its meeting held on 19th December, 2011 has agreed to establish National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell at Mizoram University vide its Resolution No. EC: 3(2) Dt. 19th December 2011. To initiate establishment of NSS Cell, the University has appointed Prof. P. Rinawma, Department of Geography & Resource Management as Programme Coordinator. With the initiation of the Programme Coordinator and on the recommendation of State Level NSS Advisory Committee meeting held on 18th April, 2012, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India permitted to open NSS Cell in the Mizoram University vide No. F.No.5/19/NSS- NER/2012-13/301 dated 6th June 2012. The Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell is entrusted with the task of establishing linkages between Mizoram University (including its constituent and affiliated colleges) and Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The primary role of the Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell is to supervise and coordinate NSS Programme in the university and its constituent and affiliated colleges. Presently, there are 104 NSS units (comprising of 104 Programme Officers and 10400 volunteers) in 26 higher educational institutions across Mizoram under the NSS Cell, Mizoram University. In recognition of the commendable services towards community development by the Programme Officers and volunteers, Mizoram University received the highly prestigious INDIRA GANDHI NSS AWARD 2010-2011 (University Level Award).

NSS Unit, Mizoram University:

The Mizoram University NSS Unit was started in 2012 with 6 units and 6 Programme Officers. The current Programme Officers of NSS Unit, MZU are – Dr. Ayangbam Shyamkishor (Political Science), Dr. B. Lalremruata (Physics), Dr. Lalneihtluangi Fanai, (Commerce), Dr. Ruth Lalremruati (Mizo) and Dr. B. Lalzarliana (Sociology). The unit has adopted 6 villages and urban slums like Tanhril, Sakawrtuichhun, Lengte, Ailawng, Tuivamit and Reiek to sustain community development through various activities. Special camps are organized every year in any of these adopted villages to create community assets and awareness among the public on various themes. Regular activities for creation of assets, tree plantation, blood donation, observation of important days etc are also organized at regular intervals.
