The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, managed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. The main objective of NSS is to develop the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, Mizoram University started functioning in 2012 with the permission of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India vide No. F.No.5/19/NSS- NER/2012-13/301 dated 6th June 2012. Prof. P. Rinawma, Department of Geography & RM was the first Programme Coordinator of the NSS Cell, Mizoram University.
The primary role of the Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell is to supervise and coordinate NSS programmes in the university and its constituent and affiliated colleges. Presently, there are 104 NSS units (comprising of 104 Programme Officers and 10400 volunteers) in 29 higher educational institutions under the NSS Cell, Mizoram University. In recognition of the commendable services towards community development, Mizoram University received the highly prestigious INDIRA GANDHI NSS AWARD 2010-2011 (University Level Award).
NSS Unit, Mizoram University:
The Mizoram University NSS Unit was started in 2012. Currently, there are 400 volunteers under 4 Program Officers. The unit has adopted 4 villages and urban slums like Tanhril, Ailawng, Lengte and Reiek to sustain community development through various activities. Special Camps are organized every year in these adopted villages to create community assets and provide awareness on various social issues through various activities to the general public. Regular activities for creation of assets, tree plantation, blood donation, observation of important days etc are also organized at regular intervals.
