The Department of Sociology, Mizoram University, celebrated Chapchar Kut on 3rd March 2026 with immense joy and cultural pride. The occasion was graciously attended by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, as the Kut Pa along with the Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pravakar Rath, and the Dean of Social Sciences, Prof. H.K. Laldinpuii Fente. Former Head of the Department Prof. R.K. Mohanty served as the Kut Thlengtu. The programme commenced with the traditional Hlado, setting a vibrant cultural tone for the day.
In his address delivered in the Mizo language, Prof. R.K. Mohanty emphasized the importance of preserving Chapchar Kut as a living tradition, and expressed his desire that such celebrations continue annually in the department, reminding everyone of the need to uphold the beautiful Mizo values of Tlawmngaihna and Aia Upa Zah. The Vice Chancellor highlighted culture, tradition, and language as the core markers of identity. He expressed his gratitude for being able to witness and experience the historic and vibrant traditions of the Mizo people through this celebration. The Pro Vice-Chancellor further reflected on the importance of festivals across societies, noting that while every community celebrates its own distinct festivals, Chapchar Kut stands as one of the most significant festivals of the Mizo society. He also appreciated the Department of Sociology for organizing such a meaningful and well-coordinated event.
This was followed by a series of traditional dances and musical performances presented by both faculty members and students, reflecting the rich heritage and collective spirit of the Mizo community. The celebration concluded on a joyful note, with students, scholars, faculty members, and guests sharing moments of cultural pride and togetherness. Lalruatsanga (4th Semester) and Lalngaihzuali (2nd Semester) were crowned Mister and Miss Chapchar Kut respectively, adding excitement and festivity to the occasion. The programme ended with refreshments.
