About:
The Department of English and Culture Studies was established in 1979 under NEHU Mizoram Campus as Department of English. It was absorbed under Mizoram University on 2nd July 2001. The department has been conducting M.A. classes since its inception and Ph.D. Course-work since 2010.The nomenclature of the department was changed to Department of English and Culture Studies as per approval of Ministry of Education, Govt. of India and its subsequent publication in the Gazette of India on 11th July 2022.The Department has been the only one under the university to be awarded the UGC-SAP. The thrust area of the UGC-SAP DRS I was “Emergent Literatures from North East India” (2011-2016). It was upgraded to UGC-SAP DRS II (2016-2020) with the thrust area on “Situating the Mizo/Zohnahthlak in Mizoram and Manipur: A Study of the Historical and Socio-Cultural Processes of Emergent Identities from Orality to Writing”. It has its thrust areas in literature, culture studies and translation. Additionally, the department has established fruitful collaborations with esteemed Fulbright Senior Specialists, including Professors Lawrence B. Fuller, Bernard Koloski, and Frederick Will. These collaborations have further enhanced the department’s academic prestige and research capabilities.
Over the years, the Department has flourished, boasting esteemed faculty and experiencing significant expansion in research endeavours and faculty size. It has produced notable research monographs, published in esteemed academic journals, and contributed to prestigious reference works. The PhD program, which includes rigorous coursework attracts some of the finest scholars from both within and beyond Mizoram. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive and advanced education in literature, drawing in candidates who are passionate about pushing the boundaries of research and knowledge. So far, the Department has produced a notable number of advanced degree recipients, with 51 earning MPhil degrees and 52 obtaining Ph.D. qualifications. This remarkable achievement highlights the Department’s dedication to academic excellence and its significant role in fostering high-level research and scholarship.The Department offers a diverse MA curriculum designed to enrich students’ understanding of literature while fostering their critical thinking skills. This comprehensive program encourages students to engage deeply with various aspects of literary studies through a range of practical and academic activities. Students are involved in a variety of enriching programs aimed at applying their theoretical knowledge in practical settings. They participate in practical teaching experiences in schools, which allow them to develop their teaching skills and gain firsthand experience in educational settings. Additionally, students undertake the task of writing book reviews, which hones their analytical skills and ability to critically evaluate literary works. The curriculum also includes a translation project as well as writing of a dissertation, which allows students to conduct in-depth research on a topic of their choice. This process helps them develop strong research skills, learn to formulate and defend arguments, and contribute original insights to the field of literary studies. Through these diverse and comprehensive activities, the Department’s MA program not only enriches students’ knowledge of literature but also equips them with practical skills and critical thinking abilities, preparing them for a range of professional and academic opportunities.
As such, the Department has a good record of students who have successfully passed their qualifying exams for teaching positions, including the National Eligibility Test (NET) and the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET). Additionally, they have secured prestigious fellowships such as the JRF, among others, to support their further research endeavours. Through these achievements, students have gained recognition and opportunities to advance their professional and academic pursuits.The Department has also successfully organized numerous national and international seminars and workshops, attracting esteemed scholars and renowned academicians nationwide. These initiatives also integrate into classroom instruction, introducing students to prominent public figures and facilitating diverse discussions beyond their prescribed curriculum. This exposure enriches the students’ academic experience, broadening their perspectives and enhancing their intellectual growth. Alumni from the Department have excelled in academia, government sector, publishing, mass communication, and entrepreneurship, showcasing remarkable success across diverse professional domains.To enhance the educational experience of students and provide research scholars with a wealth of resources, the Department proudly maintains its own Library that is home to an extensive collection of books on a wide array of subjects within the field of literature and beyond. This facility is a cornerstone of the Department’s commitment to academic excellence and is designed to support the diverse needs of its users. Overall, the Department of English and Culture Studies not only equips students with a solid foundation in literature and culture but also provide a nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment, helping students develop a nuanced understanding of their field and preparing them to make meaningful contributions to the academic and cultural landscapes.

Activities:
- Sanitation:
Students perform sanitation of the classrooms, washrooms and hallways on a weekly basis in order to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. Duties are assigned on rotation and are carried out without disturbing classes and other academic activities.
- Study Tour:
Study tour is conducted for the students of the department in order to broaden their perspectives and exposure. Faculty in charge is assigned for each study tour in order that the study tour is conducted in a systematic manner that enhances the students. Study tours had been conducted at various places across the country as well as within the state.
- Field Projects:
As part of the curriculum, students undertake various field projects.

Field Project-IV: Translation
These field projects facilitate the students to learn and develop their knowledge on diverse areas outside the classrooms. It also facilitate the students to make contributions to society at large.
- Varsity Week:
Students of the department actively participate in various co-curricular activities within the university. Among many activities, the most prominent is the annual Varsity Week organized by the Students Council of Mizoram University. Over the years, students of the department have won prizes in various competitions. These activities, often participated in groups, foster bond and friendship among the students, and also provide recreation from the pressures of academic activities.
