Yunus Social Business Centre
Mizoram University is a Central University established by an Act of Indian Parliament (No. 8 of 2000) and it became functional from 2nd July 2001. It is the only Central University in the State of Mizoram. The University at present has a total of 37 functioning academic departments offering UG, PG. M.Phil, Ph.D programmes. It has one constituent college and 35 affiliated colleges. Mizoram University has been credited ‘A’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2019. The University, as part of its academic programme and social responsibility, is involved in various community and rural development activities.
Attracted by the noble idea and practice of social business, Mizoram University desired to establish Yunus Social Business Centre (YSBC) in the campus. This desire prompted the University to contact the Yunus Centre in Dhaka, Bangladesh for possibility of establishing YSBC in Mizoram University. The Yunus Centre then came forward with no hesitation in granting permission to establish YSBC in the University. After few formalities – signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Agreement, the Mizoram University – Yunus Social Business Centre (MZU-YSBC) came into existence on 8th July, 2020 as partner institution in promoting social business.
Professor Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Yunus Centre said that poverty is unnecessarily imposed by society on people, and that creating a poverty-free world is a matter of will. MZU-YSBC is an academic institution partner dedicated to join hands in the global campaign for ‘Poverty-Free World.’ The vision of MZU-YSBC is to create a ‘Poverty-Free Mizoram and Beyond’ and make it a better place to live by applying the social business concept.
The MZU-YSBC will strive towards inculcating the concept and practice of social business in people so that more and more will be dedicated to the cause of social mission – solving the social problems of poverty, inequality, unemployment and environmental degradation in a sustainable way which will ultimately lead to ‘Poverty-Free Mizoram and Beyond’ and make it a better place to live for the present and future generations.
What we do in the MZU-YSBC will be guided by, but not limited to, the following:
1) Awareness creation and spreading of social business concept through training, events, social media etc.
2) Building partnership with like-minded local, national and international institutions or organizations.
