School of Education, Mizoram University became functional with the appointment of the 1st Dean Prof. Lalhmasai on 12th August, 2022. Since Prof. Lalhmasai retired on 29th February 2024, Prof H.Malsawmi was appointed as the Dean, School of Education from 1st March 2024
Its history of establishment started from XII Five Year Plan. In response to the UGC’s invitation for supplementary proposal under XII plan for establishment of Department of Education for strengthening of teacher education; Mizoram University submitted a proposal for starting of B.Ed. and M.Ed. programmes in the Department of Education which was established way back in 1979.
In March 2013, the UGC conveyed its release of grants-in-aid amounting Rs.10 crores to Mizoram University for establishment of School of Education under General Development Grant during XII Plan for the year 2012-2013. The UGC in August, 2013 approved B.Ed. and M.Ed. courses and 13 faculty positions for the courses. Subsequently, more faculty positions were sanctioned by the UGC. Recognition of the said courses was sought from NCTE and the same was obtained in 2016. B.Ed. programme was started in the newly constructed building in 2016 and M.Ed. programme in 2018.
In line with the provision of School of Education under the Scheme of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), up-gradation of the existing Department of Education to School of Education was approved in principle by the 32nd meeting of Academic Council in 2017. The process, however, took time due to the requirement of amendment of MZU Statutes which needed the approval of the then MHRD now MoE. Now, with the approval of the MoE and UGC, the previous School of Education and Humanities has been bifurcated into School of Education and School of Humanities and Languages.
