Mizoram University was created by an Act of Parliament (No. 8 of 2000) and it became functional from 2nd July, 2001. The University is located at Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram and is spread over 978.1988 acres in an area on the outskirts of the city. Prior to the existence of Mizoram University, the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) with headquarters at Shillong was operating a campus in Mizoram. Headed by a Pro-Vice Chancellor, the then Mizoram Campus of NEHU consisted of seven Post-Graduate Departments, namely, Economics, Education, English, Forestry, Mizo, Psychology and Public Administration. During the last 22 years of its existence, Mizoram University has made considerable progress in terms of infrastructure, academic programmes, manpower and support services.
Mizoram University was accredited ‘A’ grade by NAAC in 2014 and 2019. It was also awarded ISO Certification in 2018. The University was ranked as one of the top 100 Universities in India, assessed by the NIRF rankings from 2016 to 2023 under MHRD. In the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022, Mizoram University secured 1st Rank in North-East Region of India. Mizoram University ranked 1st among the central universities of the North East region by bagging the 13th position in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2023’s Top 20 Central Universities catagory. The University has 39 functioning academic departments offering UG, PG and Ph.D. programmes under 10 Schools of Study. The University has 40 affiliated colleges and one constituent college. The University is one of the pioneering Universities in the country which has successfully implemented the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) since 2013. In line with the NEP 2020 Mizoram University is progressing towards offering programmes that envisage broad based, multi-disciplinary and holistic education at various levels of UG and PG Programmes.
The University was awarded Grade ‘A’ by the Mizoram State Pollution Control Board which conducted a Green Audit of the University Campus during the months of March-April 2013. It is an eco-friendly University and is one of the first Universities in the country to run effectively on Solar Power System. The Academic Buildings, Hostels, Administrative Blocks and the streetlights within the Campus are all supported by the Solar photo voltaic power plant for electricity.
The University provides facilities for Disabled and Visually Challenged students and staff. All buildings in the University Campus have ramps for wheelchairs; disabled-friendly washrooms are also available in the hostels.
Faculty and students play an active role in extension activities like the Red Ribbon Club, Techno Club, NSS and SPIC MACAY- Heritage Club. Several members of the faculty and students are also actively involved in social services, some of which are curriculum stipulated.
The University from its inception encourages its students to take part in Sports and Cultural Activities. The University has a Sports department with different coaches. Every year the students participate in the East Zone Inter University Sports and in the All India Inter University Sports.
Mizoram University is about an hour’s drive from the heart of the main city of Aizawl, the capital of the State of Mizoram. The University provides transportation at a highly subsidized rate. The City is connected by Air from Kolkata, Guwahati & Imphal. It is also well connected by road from Silchar, Guwahati, Shillong etc. The nearest Railhead is Silchar. Mizoram has a pleasant climate and is generally cool in summer and not very cold in winter. The temperature varies from 11°C to 21°C in winter and between 20°C and 29°C in summer. Mizoram has great natural beauty and is also very rich in flora and fauna.
The University is ranked 76th position in NIRF 2023.
School of Education, Mizoram University became functional with the appointment of the Dean on 12th August, 2022. Its history of establishment started from XII Five Year Plan. In response to the UGC’s invitation for supplementary proposal under XII plan for establishment of Department of Education for strengthening of teacher education; Mizoram University submitted a proposal for starting of B.Ed. and M.Ed. programmes in the Department of Education which was established way back in 1979.
In March 2013, the UGC conveyed its release of grants-in-aid amounting Rs.10 crores to Mizoram University for establishment of School of Education under General Development Grant during XII Plan for the year 2012-2013. The UGC in August, 2013 approved B.Ed. and M.Ed. courses and 13 faculty positions for the courses. Subsequently, more faculty positions were sanctioned by the UGC. Recognition of the said courses was sought from NCTE and the same was obtained in 2016. B.Ed. programme was started in the newly constructed building in 2016 and M.Ed. programme in 2018.
In line with the provision of School of Education under the Scheme of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), up-gradation of the existing Department of Education to School of Education was approved in principle by the 32nd meeting of Academic Council in 2017. The process, however, took time due to the requirement of amendment of MZU Statutes which needed the approval of the then MHRD now MoE. Now, with the approval of the MoE and UGC, the previous School of Education and Humanities has been bifurcated into School of Education and School of Humanities and Languages.
The first School Board meeting was held on 15th November, 2022.
The Department was started with one year M.Ed. programme in the year 1980, which was replaced by a two-year M.Ed. programme for one academic session in 1985-86. Since then, the M.Ed. programme has been replaced by M.A. Education programme of four semesters – duration. Along with this, the Department has been offering Ph.D. programme. M.Phil. programme has also been started since the session 2009-2010. In 2013 UGC Sanctioned for Establishment of School of Education. The University authorities resolved to upgrade Department of Education to School of Education, and it has been approved by all statutory bodies of the University however the approval of MHRD is awaited. Department has started Two Years B. Ed. Programme from the session 2016-17 and Two Years M. Ed. Programme from the academic session 2018-19.
The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is an initiative introduced to reform teacher education by Ministry of Education, Government of India. Mizoram University received a Letter of Intent (LoI) for grant of recognition/permission for offering ITEP under 7 (13) of the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Regulation, 2014-Reg on 3rd October 2023 for B.A. B.Ed., B.Sc. B.Ed. & B.Com. B.Ed courses. This programme will function under the Department of Education, Mizoram University from the Academic Session 2024-2025. This programme is a dual-major holistic Bachelor’s Degree in Education as well as specialized subjects such as language, social sciences, science, mathematics, and commerce.
