About the Department :

The Mizo Department at Mizoram University was originally established in 1997 under the auspices of North-Eastern Hill University. Following its transition to Mizoram University, it became the seventh department in terms of its establishment chronology. In 2022, the department celebrated its Silver Jubilee with year-long festivities culminating in a grand finale held on August 12, 2023.

Currently, the department comprises six faculty members and two non-teaching staff members. Initially, both the department and the entire university operated from rented facilities, and the number of students admitted depended on the available resources. Due to the increased number of applicants, the seats in the Master’s Degree program have risen from 35 to 50.

The research facility has been accessible for Ph.D. programs since 2007 and for M.Phil. programs since 2010. To date, fifteen Ph.D. candidates and thirty-nine M.Phil. scholars have successfully obtained their degrees, with twenty-two Ph.D. scholars currently in progress. The department’s current focus is on instilling a critical mindset in students and nurturing creativity in literary pursuits. Additionally, the department publishes a quarterly refereed journal titled ‘Mizo Studies,’ which holds the ISSN – 2319-6041. ‘Mizo Studies’ primarily showcases research articles centered on Mizo and Mizoram, but it also includes research articles in literature, language, and culture studies that extend beyond the Mizo region.

Furthermore, the department has established a Museum and Art gallery through self-financing with the generous contributions of alumni. The introduction of the NEP Syllabus in 2021 has provided the department with opportunities to overcome certain barriers, especially in the realms of field projects and interdisciplinary studies. This development has allowed the department to explore broader horizons in the domains of culture and folk studies.
