MPhil and PhD Programme in Sociology, MZU  

Introduction: The MPhil and PhD programme in Sociology at MZU is to rethink, revise and rejuvenate the sociological knowledge by engaging in a purposive dialogue with dynamic discourse, typically associated with North East India and Pan Indian scenario including emergent perspectives from west and other parts of the globe. Such students are only welcome whose commitment as research scholars in Sociology may reflect these concerns and interests. Our commitment goes with teaching and training students who will help push the bounds of interdisciplinary knowledge that will enable the development of North East region by being aware of its diverse histories, concerns and approaches under the discipline of Sociology as a whole.

The M.Phil Programme of one and half year duration will be spread over three semesters. Eligibility for admission to the M. Phil programme in Sociology will be MA in Sociology with 55% marks from a recognized university. NET/ JRF shall be preferred. The selection will be based on written test, GD and/or personal interview. The actual number of students to be admitted in a year will depend on the availability of facilities/students in the Department.
Credit Distribution: As per uniform credit distribution at MZU, MPhil Course in Sociology shall be of total 24 credits. Three papers for course work shall have four credits each and Dissertation shall be of 12 Credits. Each paper for course work shall have four units each. A student is required to write a dissertation. The Research Proposal has to be submitted at the beginning of the second semester.

Attendance and Leave: (1) Minimum of 95 percent of attendance in classes is compulsory for fellowship. (2) Minimum of 75 percent of attendance in classes is compulsory to appear in exams. A  student  can  take  leave  for  a  maximum  of  four  working  days  in  a  semester  on  the recommendation of Course Co-ordinator and granted by the HoD.

All matters relating to MPhil and PhD shall be governed by regulations and ordinances of MZU.
