Ph.D./M.Phil Programme in Physics

Syllabus for Course Work (updated on 13.6.2015)

The Department of Physics, Mizoram University has introduced PhD/M.Phil Course (Under OC-4 MZU Ordinance under Section 28(1) (b) of the MZU Act, 2000). The Course as a duration of one Semester with effect from the academic session August 2009, which is mandatory for doing Ph.D. at the University as per the notification of the UGC Regulations 2010. During the semester, the scholars will undergo Course Work in Research Methodology and some branches of Physics like Experimental Methods, Quantum Field Theory, Solid State Electronics, Spectroscopic Methods, Condensed Matter Physics and Solid State Laser materials, Nuclear Physics, etc. The prime objective of the program is to train the scholars in the recent methodologies of Theoretical and Experimental Physics. On completion of the Course Work only, the scholars will be considered to undergo the process of registration for Ph.D. programme in Physics under Mizoram University.

Objectives:

To widen the understanding of Physics in theory and practice.

To strengthen analytical and creative thinking with reference to emerging challenges in Physics.

To sharpen both the Quantitative and Qualitative research skills.

Pre-Ph.D./M.Phil. Course Structure:

The Ph.D.(Physics) Course will consist of two(2) parts.

Part A – Course Work : Three courses in the first semester for 100 marks each.

Part B - Thesis

Methods of Instructions:

Lectures/Discussions/Tutorials/Seminars/Workshop, etc.

Method of Evaluation:

Internal

Each course shall be evaluated for 100 marks with two components.

Internal Assessment - 1 Seminar Presentation/1 Book Review or Literature Survey/1 Project Work – 40 marks

External

End Semester Examination – 60 marks

Part – B Thesis

Topic of the Thesis will be decided by the Faculty as per University ordinances.
