About us:

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Mizoram University was established in 2006 with the aim of providing Post Graduate (PG) and Ph.D. degree programs in Mathematics and Computer Sciences. The academic programs started in 2007. At the moment the Department is running a M. Sc. in Mathematics and Ph. D. programs in areas of Differential Geometry, Dynamical Systems, Mathematical Modeling and Network security, Continuum Mechanics.
The sanctioned strength of the teaching staff of the Department is 8. There are 6 teachers in position. They are actively engaged in Research in addition to teaching in PG program and publishing research findings in various national and international Journals of repute.
The courses are designed (Core Papers + Soft Courses + Open Electives) as Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) as per the UGC guidelines. The open elective courses are opted by students from other Departments as well. The present intake of PG students is 35. The Department produced 9 Ph. D. students so far.
The Department organized many workshops for the benefit of the students and teachers sponsored by various funding agencies including UGC, NBHM and ISI Kolkata. The Department is working towards removing Mathematics phobia among young school students. In this regard, many workshops were organized in schools of Aizawl and introduced Mathematical Modeling and ICT based methods to motive and generate more interests among the students.
The Department was supported by the DST-FIST at school level. The Department is also supported by NBHM (National Board for Higher Mathematics) Library grant regularly.

Vision of the Department:

  • To build the Department as a center of excellence
  • To produce quality students
  • To open job oriented short term courses and MCA programme that will benefit students to get employment easily
  • To remove Mathematics Phobia among students by taking suitable measures like training students and teachers in different levels in Schools
  • To introduce Computer aided methods for teaching and learning Mathematics in Schools

Research Areas/Overview:

The Department has six faculty members who are actively engaged in teaching and Research. Fifteen students are currently registered for their Ph. D. whereas nine students are already awarded the degree. Major/Minor research projects are carried out by the faculty members funded by DIT, DST, UGC and CSIR, some completed and some are ongoing. The thrust areas of research include Mathematical Modeling, Intrusion Detection Systems, Network Security, Differential Geometry and Continuum Mechanics. The faculty members are regularly publishing their research findings in international Journals of repute.
